Review of Beauty Kubes : A Zero Waste Shampoo that Actually Works?

I always thought that shampoo would be one of those things I’d keep having to buy in plastic bottles. I tried a couple of shampoo bars but found they left a funny residue, and it wasn’t something I wanted to have to deal with. So I’ll be honest, I was a little sceptical when I first tried Beauty Kubes. Fast forward a couple of months and I am a convert for life, and so pleased to have found another zero waste switch that is even better than the plastic-laden alternative.

Here is my full Beauty Kubes review. I have tried the three different varieties of shampoo, and my husband tested the men’s version (which really could be unisex!).

The facts

Beauty Kubes are solid shampoo cubes made by Eve of St Agnes, a company based in Cornwall, UK. All their plastic free products are made by hand, in a facility powered by green energy from solar and wind turbines.

The cubes come packaged in a cardboard box with paper wrapping inside, and are completely free from plastic. The ingredient list is impressive, being vegan and cruelty free, and free from palm oil and palm derivatives. The full ingredient list for the normal to dry hair version is as follows:

Tapioca starch*, Sodium cocoyl isethionate, Cocos nucifera milk (coconut milk) powder*, Sodium cocoyl glutamate, Inulin, Rosa centifolia flower powder, Panthenol, Glycerin (Palm-free, from a rapeseed source), Citrus aurantium dulcis peel oil*, Citrus paradisi peel oil*, Tocopherol*, Maltodextrin*, Cymbopogon martinii oil*, Limnanthes alba seed oil, Helianthus annuus seed oil, Acacia senegal gum, d-Limonene**, Citral**, Geraniol**, Linalol**, Farnesol**

*Organic ingredient **Occurs naturally in essential oil.

There are 4 different varieties of shampoo, and two of them double up as 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash. Each box contains 27 cubes and is priced at £9.50.

What I love

Better than a normal shampoo. Often when you switch to a zero waste alternative, you’re expecting to have to compromise a bit on performance. This is definitely true of a lot of shampoo bars, which leave a residue that builds up over time. With Beauty Kubes, it felt just like using a standard shampoo. My hair was soft and shiny (so much so that I couldn’t stop touching it!) and felt very clean. In fact the clean was so good that my hair is lasting longer between washes. I can now comfortably go a week between washing my hair, which is a total bonus when you have two small children.

Easy to use. Using a Beauty Kube is super easy. You take a cube (or two if your hair is long and thick), crumble it into the palm of your hand, add a little water and rub your palms together. This forms a paste which you rub into your hair to produce a lather, just like normal shampoo. Just make sure you don’t get them wet before you need to use them!

Free from everything except good stuff. Vegan friendly, cruelty free, paraben free, sodium laureth sulfate free, palm oil free… But full of a lot of organic and biodegradable. Perfect.

Scent. They smell divine! Each variety has a slightly different scent, with my favourite being the oily hair version which smells like lemongrass. It made my bathroom feel a little bit like a spa, only with more bath toys...

Great for travel. Each cube is nice and small, making this a great option for travel. Beauty Kubes sell travel packs, or you can simply put a few cubes into a travel box. A bonus is that since they aren’t liquid, you can take these cubes in hand luggage without adding to your liquids allowance.

Different variations for different hair types. Often shampoo bars are ‘one size fits all’. I love that Beauty Kubes do a few different varieties to cater for different hair types. I have oily hair but a dry scalp and found that the oily hair version was slightly too drying for my scalp, but the normal to dry version was just perfect.

What I don’t love

Price. Beauty Kubes are on the pricey side at around £9 for 27 cubes. To me the price is totally worth it because I’m getting a great shampoo, and I only need one cube per wash for my short-ish, low maintenance hair. But if you have longer hair or like to wash your hair more often, you might find these too pricey.

Overall Review

I’m really glad to have found a zero waste shampoo that works! I’d given up hope of finding one, thinking that all shampoo bars would leave me with build up, but happily Beauty Kubes feel just like normal shampoo and are lovely to use. I can see myself using these for a very long time!
