Fussy Deodorant Review : Natural Deodorant that Actually Works?

When it comes to deodorant, it can often feel like you have to choose between performance and sustainability. It’s really important that deodorant works well, especially in the summer time, and a deodorant that doesn’t work effectively is no use at all.

I recently had the opportunity to try out Fussy deodorant, a natural deodorant that boasts a formulation enriched with prebiotics and other natural ingredients. As someone who actively seeks out clean and safe personal care products, I was intrigued to see how this deodorant would perform in comparison to conventional options. Let’s find out how I got on.

How Does Fussy Deodorant Work?

Fussy is a natural, sustainable deodorant. To begin with, you buy a starter set with a refillable case and as many refills as you like. When your refill runs out, you remove the empty refill (which is made of biodegradable card) and simply pop in a new refill. It’s very simple to replace the refills, and you can even get them on subscription to save time.

The deodorant itself is packed with loads of fab ingredients to keep you feeling fresh and to care for the planet too. Tapioca keeps you dry, sunflower wax, coconut oil and shea butter help the deodorant go on smoothly, and sodium bicarbonate and magnesium hydroxide are there to keep odour away. However the thing I love most of all is that Fussy contains a probiotic called Lactobacillus which keeps the smelly bacteria at bay whilst keeping your underarm healthy. And most importantly, Fussy is free of pthalates, aluminium, parabens and any other nasties you might find in other deodorants.

The different scents contain varying amounts of additional ingredients, but all are natural. Unlike many other deodorant brands, who use artificial scents, Fussy uses natural fragrances that are approved by the International Fragrance Regulatory Association (IFRA).

How to Refill Fussy Deodorant

Refilling your Fussy deodorant is really simple. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Wind the bottom so that the old refill goes all the way back inside the case

  2. Take the lid off and pinch the buttons on each side of the case to take the top part off.

  3. Pop in the new refill and push it down.

  4. Put the top of the case back on.

  5. Wind the new refill up until it’s ready to use

How Long Does Fussy Deodorant Last?

I find that each refill lasts around 8 weeks, though my husband gets through them a little quicker. It will also depend a little on the time of year - we use more in the summer when the weather is warm and we’re more active.

Where is Fussy Deodorant Made? Who owns Fussy Deodorant?

Fussy Deodorant is handmade in the UK, saving a load of airmiles and helping the local economy. The business is still owned by its founder Matt Kennedy, making it one of the few deodorant options available that isn’t ultimately owned by a large pharmaceutical company.

Is Fussy Deodorant Sustainable?

Fussy is one of the most sustainable deodorants out there! From its recycled and recyclable packaging, made using minimal paper and card, to its refillable case made of recycled plastic bottles, everything about Fussy is designed to be sustainable. Even the refills are made of waste sugar cane! The company is also completely carbon neutral, thanks to a partnership with Climate Partner.

In recognition of all of this, Fussy have the coveted B Corp certification, demonstrating their commitment to transparent and sustainable practices.

Does Fussy Deodorant Work?

Yes! I’ve been using Fussy for about a year now, and I’ve never had a stinky day! This is saying a lot, because I’m a very active mum of 4 who walks everywhere! Even on days where I exercise, Fussy still keeps me smelling good.

What truly sets it apart, however, is its gentle feel on the skin. Some natural deodorants contain ingredients which can be irritating to the skin but Fussy Deodorant glides on smoothly and feels incredibly gentle, even on my sensitive skin.

If you’re switching from a standard deodorant to Fussy, be prepared that there may be a week or two transition period, where your body adjusts to the natural ingredients. Aluminium-based deodorants basically work by clogging your pores, so you may encounter some short term smells while your body is getting used to Fussy.

Is Fussy Deodorant better than Wild?

While I find both Wild and Fussy effective as deodorants, there are a few things about Fussy that mean I keep returning to it:

  1. The incredible scents, which I prefer to Wild’s scents. Each of Fussy’s scents is a blend of gorgeous essential oils which feel so great to put on your body each morning. My personal favourite is Cloud Nine.

  2. The ingredient list for Fussy is a little more impressive - and the addition of the probiotic makes it a little more effective on busy days

  3. The Fussy case is (in my opinion!) is much more aesthetically pleasing! I love the colours, and the artist originals are very fun!
