Review of Clean Living Cleaning Products : new natural cleaning products to hit the UK

If you’re anything like me, there was probably a time when you didn’t give a second thought to the products in your cleaning cupboard. Mine used to be filled with all manner of plastic bottles containing harmful chemicals that just weren’t necessary for our home. Over the last couple of years I’ve gradually used up the products we had and have moved towards simpler, less toxic, natural cleaning products for our home.

While I do usually tend to DIY my cleaning products, it’s nice to have something for the areas that need a really good clean. I’m quite happy to use my own all-purpose cleaner day-to-day (find the recipe here), but when I do a monthly deep clean I like to add in something that’s specifically formulated for killing nasty bacteria. It’s also good to have products designed for particularly stubborn dirt and stains. This is where I like to try new companies like UK-based Clean Living, who make non-toxic, natural cleaning products that they claim are just as effective as traditional chemical cleaning products.

I tried out Clean Living’s full range of products, and here are my usual in-depth thoughts.

The facts

Clean Living is a UK-based natural cleaning product company. Their formulations are free from toxic chemicals, vegan and cruelty free. They also aim to reduce plastic waste by supplying their products in refill packets to be used with their reusable bottles. To use, you pour the refill pack into the bottle and top up with water. The refill packs are made of plastic, but can be returned to Clean Living for recycling.

You can buy a full caddy of products for £43.99 or individual products for £8.99 including the refillable bottle, or £5.97 for a pack of three refills.

They’re natural, non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan, and free of all the nasties that usually come in cleaning products

What I love

Natural, non-toxic, vegan: The products have an impressive list of credentials. They’re natural, non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan, and free of all the nasties that usually come in cleaning products (to name just a few). If you’re nervous about using traditional cleaning products in your house, Clean Living is for you.

Performance: Clean Living make some bold claims about their products, such as that they contain enzymes that actually prevent the regrowth of bad bacteria. I didn’t particularly notice them being superior to other cleaning products, but they did do a good job of cleaning. My favourite is the Biological Odour and Spot Remover, which I used to spot clean our carpets and sofa and worked a treat at lifting out stains.

Eco-friendly: Unlike traditional cleaning products, these don’t produce a ton of plastic waste. The bottles can be reused, and the refill packaging can be returned to Clean Living for recycling. The added benefit of the refill system is that there is less bulk to ship, since the refills are concentrated and topped up with water at home.

Made in the UK: It’s great that Clean Living’s products are manufactured in the UK, preventing unnecessary transportation and reducing their carbon impact.

What I don’t love

Lack of ‘heavy-duty’ cleaners: When I’m looking to buy cleaning products, what I really want is products for the areas that I can’t clean with my DIY recipes (That’s things like the toilet and the oven!) Clean Living’s range is mostly made up of every day cleaners, which aren’t so useful to me.

Bottles: The refillable bottles are made of aluminium, which is recyclable and long lasting. It’s not the prettiest though! I’ll use them now that I have them, but I would have preferred a glass bottle. If I was buying for the first time, I’d probably just buy the refills and use my own glass bottles.

In summary

These are effective cleaning products which work well whilst still managing to be eco-friendly and non-toxic. While they aren’t noticeably better than other cleaning products, whether eco or not, they do work, and would be great for someone hoping to reduce the chemicals in their home and do a bit for the planet.
