How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Spring (Nursing and Maternity Friendly!)

This post is sponsored by VIVAIA. You can find my review of VIVAIA’s beautiful shoes here.

It feels like spring is right around the corner, and with the changing seasons and a changing body, it’s time to refresh my wardrobe. Of course, as always, I’ll be buying secondhand or making my own wherever I can!

Some of you know that I’ve just had a baby - little Jesse is currently 10 weeks old. We’ve been taking some time to settle into life as a family of 5 but I’m back and feeling very ready to start refreshing my life. The first place I’m making some changes for spring is to switch up my wardrobe. My body is still recovering from growing a baby, so lots of last year’s clothes don’t fit at the moment. I’ll store them away for the future, but in the meantime I’ve popped around the local charity shops to pick up some new pieces, as well as making a couple of bits.

Since I’m currently breastfeeding I’m also going to be sharing lots of tips for finding nursing-friendly clothing, as well as things that might work if you’re planning to have another baby. You don’t want to have to buy a new wardrobe each time, so it can help to look for things that are flexible throughout the season of motherhood.

Step 1: Clear out anything that doesn’t fit or you’re not wearing

Before you start buying it’s really important to take stock of what you already have in your wardrobe. Clear out anything that doesn’t fit or that you no longer wear. You don’t have to throw things away. If I love something but it’s just not working in this season, I’ll store it for later. Anything I know I won’t ever wear again goes to friends or the charity shop.

Step 2: Make a list of things you need

Since I’m currently breastfeeding I also needed to make sure that I was looking for things that would work for that.

The key things to look out for are wrap tops, button downs like shirts or shirt dresses, cropped jumpers that can be easily lifted.

Since my body is also shrinking back down after having a baby, I also wanted to look for things that would fit me now but also work at a smaller size, so I was on the lookout for elasticated waists (which I promise aren’t just for old people!), stretchy skirts and anything oversized that would work on a larger or a smaller body.

When it comes to shoes I will usually stick to one or two simple pairs of shoes per season, that go with everything. I absolutely love VIVAIA shoes for every day wear. Their new Aria 5° flat is the perfect basic pump that will go with so many different outfits throughout spring, and with the new version there are some lovely changes that make this an even more comfortable and sustainable shoe than before.

VIVAIA’s shoes are easily some of the most comfortable I’ve ever worn, and the new Aria 5° has new features that make them even more wonderful. Firstly, the 5 degrees in the name refers to the fact that VIVAIA have adjusted the angle of the toe box by 5 degrees so that it’s slightly wider. This is great for wide feet like mine that need a little more space to breathe!

There’s also new memory foam heel padding which is like an expensive mattress for your soles, keeping your feet pain free throughout the day. Their flexible and soft insoles are designed to rebound with each step, perfect for active days chasing toddlers or walking to and from work. The insoles are also made of herbs, so the shoes smell like a spa and stay fresh through warm spring days. The outsole has also had an upgrade, made of 2mm high elastic 100% recycled plastic, just like a little yoga mat for your feet.

Like most of VIVAIA shoes, the Aria 5° is machine washable and made from recycled materials, with each pair made from 6 recycled plastic bottles. The knit uppers are stretchy and breathable for the perfect foot-hugging shoe.

The Aria 5° is available in four colours, including a beautiful simple black and lovely natural peach which you can see in the pictures above.

Step 3: Shop (or make!)

When I know I’m looking for specific items for my wardrobe I like to visit several charity shops in one go so I’ll look for a high street with several charity shops close together. I prefer to go to more upmarket areas where you tend to find better quality or more high end items, but you could just as easily stay on your local high street. You might also want to shop online on eBay or Vinted.

Step 4: Wear!

If you’d like to see some of the outfits I’ll be wearing, take a look at my latest YouTube video, which is linked above on this post. I hope it inspires you to change up your wardrobe sustainably for Spring!
