Building a sustainable wardrobe is one of the most impactful ways we can look after the planet, and one of my favourite ways to do that is by making my own clothes from old fabrics. Wonderfully, the recent trend for quilted clothing presented me with the perfect opportunity to upcycled an old quilt that I no longer had a need for, into this beautiful upcycled dress.

HOW TO MAKE AN UPCYCLED DRESS FROM QUILTS

I shared the full process of making the dress on my YouTube channel, which I’ve linked below.

One of the things I love about sewing my own clothes is that I can make everything exactly as I want it to be! For this dress I used the All Well Cardigan Coat. This pattern is a wonderful introduction to pattern hacking - the pattern includes instructions for how to adapt the pattern to make it your own. In the video I show you exactly how I hacked the pattern, and I how I laid out the pieces to make the most of this beautiful quilt.

This is a really easy make for a beginner sewist. You’ll need to know how to gather and how to attach binding, but there are no complicated fastenings and this piece can be made in under a day.

VIVAIA’s shoes are made from super innovative materials. Most of their shoes are made from a breathable knit fabric created from recycled plastic bottles, but the new version of their classic Aria shoe, the Aria 5° is now available in hemp. I’ve spoken so much about my love for hemp before, and it’s incredible that VIVAIA have managed to incorporate this into a shoe! Hemp is one of the only carbon negative fibres, since it requires so little energy to produce, and it is naturally organic since it doesn’t require fertilisers and pesticides to grow. Hemp is also naturally anti microbial and odour resistant, making it perfect for shoes. It has moisture wicking properties to keep your feet cool and comfortable even on warm summer days.

VIVAIA’s shoes are easily some of the most comfortable I’ve ever worn. There’s memory foam heel padding which is like an expensive mattress for your soles and their flexible and soft insoles are designed to rebound with each step, perfect for active days chasing toddlers or walking to and from work. The outsole is made of soft carbon-free rubber with rice husks, just like a little yoga mat for your feet.

And as a bonus, almost all of VIVAIA’s shoes are machine washable, which means they last really well and won’t need to be replaced again and again.
