5 Things to Remember when Travelling with a Newborn Baby

As I write this, we’re approaching Christmas, and for the first time in a couple of years it looks like travelling might be possible. But whether you’re travelling to visit family or heading to a beautiful place abroad, travelling with a baby and especially a newborn, can be overwhelming!

If you are travelling with your baby for the first time, here are 5 things to remember that will make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

Travel System

A travel system is indispensable when you have new baby. There are so many different kinds, with one to suit every lifestyle, including various types of Venicci travel systems. I find it particularly helpful for newborns to have a system that works as a pushchair and also integrates with a car seat. This means you can move baby seamlessly between car and walking without having to wake them!

Baby Carrier

A baby carrier can be used in so many different ways, making it incredibly versatile! For the first couple of months after giving birth I’ve found them so valuable, for allowing you time to rest or tend to your other children. And they’re especially useful for travelling since they keep your hands free and allow you to move more easily from one place to another. There are also countless benefits for baby, including bonding, temperature regulation and reducing crying.

Lots of Change of clothes

I never go anywhere without a change of clothes for my littlest ones. Whether you’re going away for a night or spending a few weeks at a location, you’re likely to need a whole bunch more clothes for your tiny one than you need for yourself. Babies are wonderful but also really quite messy!

Nappies and Wipes

It goes without saying that you’ll need nappies and wipes whenever you’re travelling with a baby. While I’m a huge advocate of reusable nappies and wipes, travelling can be a time where you give yourself grace and use disposables for a while, but if you’re keen to try bringing your cloth nappies with you, it’s definitely possible! You can find all my tips for making cloth work on holiday here.

White Noise and a Blackout Blind

One of the things I’ve learnt the hard way over the years is that you can never expect your baby to sleep well in a new place. Now whenever I travel with a little one I always take a white noise machine (or at the very least, an app on my phone) and a blackout blind. The white noise machine drowns out any unwanted sounds and the blackout blind creates a perfectly dark environment to encourage the best sleep possible in a new environment. If you want to go the extra mile, it can be wise to bring your own sheets for baby. They tend to be very sensitive to smell and will be hugely comforted by sheets that remind them of home.
