Review of Three Mamas Natural Breastfeeding Supplements (and a discount!)

Breastfeeding is hard. Really, really hard. No one tells you about the sleepless nights cluster feeding, the nipple pain that just won’t go away, and the struggles to get that latch right. It’s no wonder that so many exhausted mamas stop feeding before six months. We need all the help we can get to make it work.

I’ve previously talked about my post-partum essentials, which includes a few necessities for getting breastfeeding established, but today I want to talk about breastfeeding supplements. Now I’m not usually one for thinking that supplements are necessary, but when a small, family-run company got in touch to tell me about theirs, I fell in love with their ethos. I haven’t had supply issues with either of my kids, but still haven’t had the happiest time breastfeeding (as you can read here), so any help is always welcome. I love that Three Mamas is all about supporting women with feeding - the founder has been through the struggle herself.

They sent me their Lacto-Squirt Torbangun Drops, and Boob Mylk Original Blend capsules. I’ve been testing them out for nearly 4 months now, from a few weeks into breastfeeding right up until now. Although the products were gifted to me, all opinions are my own and there was no obligation for me to write a review.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE

Before we dive into the review, I also want to say a little word about milk supply. If you’re finding you’re struggling with your milk supply, it’s important to seek help from a lactation consultant, midwife or health visitor. Low supply is often down to poor latch, tongue tie or another issue preventing baby from feeding effectively and regularly, so before you resort to supplements, do get in touch with someone to check how things are going. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, you should seek medical advice before taking any supplements.

Ok, on to the review!

three mamas are all about helping mothers get the best start to breastfeeding

The facts

Three Mamas is a family-run company that aims to create unique, organic products and projects that will benefit mothers who want to prolong breastfeeding using natural methods. They are based in the UK.

Their products are organic and natural, and 100% vegan friendly. There are three different varieties of their capsules, Boob Mylk, and a tincture called Lacto-Squirt.

What I love

  • Ethos: Three Mamas isn’t just about making supplements, they’re truly invested in helping mothers get the best start to their breastfeeding journey. Every product comes with a helpful guide to starting out breastfeeding, including recommendations on self-care for breastfeeding, and helpful contact information for phone support. While they haven’t launched anything yet, they are planning initiatives to help new mothers with feeding, which is very welcome when so many women struggle! If you know of any projects that they might be interested in, you can get in touch with them.

  • Effective: I was quite prepared for these to do very little for my supply, but I was pleasantly surprised to find they have a noticeable impact on how much milk I produce. As far as I’m aware I’ve never had any supply issues, though I would say that with Clem (my first baby), I definitely found my supply was on the lower side. I wasn’t one of those ladies who had milk spraying halfway across the room! This time round, though, I’ve found my boobs are huge and I definitely have had the spray situation. Partly this is normal for a second child, but I also notice that my boobs feel noticeably smaller on days where I forget to take the supplements.

The Lacto-Squirt seems to be the most effective of the supplements I tested. I notice the effects within a few hours. In fact, the active ingredient, torbangun, has been scientifically proven to increase breast milk supply by 65%.

At one stage Margot was gaining weight slowly and I might have worried that it was down to my supply, but simply upping my dosage of the Lacto-Squirt from one drop to the recommended three a day gave me comfort that I was definitely not suffering supply problems. The morning after I first did that, I was amazed at what an impact it made on my supply. It’s also been handy for times where I’m a little stressed and notice my supply struggling. Having a little boost is a comfort.

  • Natural and organic: All of Three Mamas’ products contain only pure, organic ingredients. Their galactagogues (a fancy word for milk-making herb!) have been used for centuries by women all over the world. The ingredients list for both products is comfortingly short and transparent, so you know there’s definitely no nasties! What’s more, Three Mamas even grows some of the herbs themselves. Torbangun, the active ingredient in the Lacto-Squirt, isn’t otherwise easily available in the UK.

What I don’t love

  • Price: These aren’t the cheapest of supplements, so you will need to weigh up whether they are worthwhile for you. Like I said earlier on, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve got the basics of breastfeeding sorted before you resort to supplements, and that’s definitely true here. Save your money until you know you need them (Three Mamas even say that!) But if you do find you need (or want) a boost, these are worth the money.

  • Taste: This mainly applies to the Lacto-Squirt tincture. The lack of adding flavouring or sweeteners (which is really a good thing!) means the taste is not particularly pleasant. Adding it to juice is the easiest way to mask the flavour, and it’s definitely bearable like that.

In summary

These supplements are effective and natural, with a wonderful ethos behind them. I feel really happy to support this company in its efforts to help women with breastfeeding, and it’s wonderful to have a supplement that is effective for those times where I need a supply boost. If you’re having supply issues and you’re confident you’ve got a good latch and no other issues, these could be a really excellent support to your breastfeeding journey.

If you’d like to try these out for yourself, Three Mamas have kindly set up the promo code ‘Innes2020’ for 20% off.

The products were gifted to me by Three Mamas for review, but there was no requirement for me to rate them positively, and the opinions are my own. This page contains an affiliate discount code, which earns me a little bit of commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you. Thank you!
