Review of Baba + Boo One Size Nappies

There are very few nappies out there that work for everyone. Whether it’s fit or fabric or price, there’s often something that isn’t right for everyone. Sometimes though, a nappy is such a great all-rounder that nearly everyone gets on with it. That’s how I feel about Baba + Boo, they’re one of those nappies that works for just about everyone.

We've been using Baba + Boo nappies on and off for a couple of years (the off was when my littlest was too little for them!). Here’s what I think of them. If my opinions change over time I’ll update this post to let you know.

You can find all my reusable nappy reviews here.

Overall rating

A super reliable nappy that is easy to use and great value for money. This makes a great starter nappy, and often becomes a go-to nappy for parents. It also makes a fantastic option for childcare. It isn’t the most natural nappy, but is still more natural and soft than a disposable nappy, and the beauty of the pocket design is that inserts can be switched for hemp or cotton if desired.

Summary

Type: Pocket

Absorbent material: Bamboo and microfibre, but can be changed

Reliability: Excellent

Slimness: Slightly bulky, but still slimmer than two-part and traditional cloth nappies

Fit: Large for a birth-to-potty nappy, good for chunkier and older babies

Drying time: Average

Natural: Somewhat. Better than a disposable, but inner is polyester and bamboo (a semi-synthetic processed fabric)

Ethical: Very - ethical manufacturing practices in place

The facts

Baba + Boo make pocket nappies in newborn and birth-to-potty. The two are very similar, except that the newborn size has velcro closures rather than snaps, and it's obviously smaller! They have a PUL waterproof outer with a fleece lining and come with two bamboo and microfibre mix inserts. The newborn size fits approximately 5 - 18lbs / 2.5 - 8kg) and the one size nappy from approximately 10 - 35lbs / 4.5 - 16kg.

Baba + Boo do make alternative inserts made of hemp and charcoal, or you can always stuff the nappies with cotton prefolds or another absorbent insert.

Some people use them for nighttime too, though you will almost certainly have to stuff with additional inserts.

The newborn size is £11.95 and the one size is £16.50.

Baba + Boo recommend washing their nappies at either 40 or 60 degrees. The inserts can be tumble dried, though like all nappies tumble drying too regularly may shorten their life (and isn’t great for the environment!).

Like all nappies made of natural fibres, these will need a few pre-washes to reach full absorbency, but I put them through one wash and then change more often until they reach full absorbency (I’m too impatient!)

What I love

Absorbency: Baba + Boo nappies are some of the most absorbent nappies out there. The two inserts that come with the nappy are so absorbent that some people find they can get a few hours out of one insert (as we did with our first little one). As with any pocket, you also have the option to vary the absorbent material you're using, tailoring it to your child.

Containment: These nappies have some of the best containment out there. Coupled with their absorbency, this makes them super reliable and a go-to for many parents who want something they don't have to worry about.

Value for money: Given the quality and reliability of these nappies, they're an excellent price. The nappies last really well through multiple children, yet are some of the more affordable nappies out there.

Ethical manufacture: One of the things the founder of Baba + Boo has focussed on is manufacturing her nappies ethically. Their factory is held to an ethical code of conduct and manufacturing standards. A great example is that the factory’s lead times are really long because the factory does not do overtime, the ladies that make our nappies have children and work around them. I love that their approach to manufacturing aligns with the brand’s ethos.

What I don’t love

Synthetic materials: Like most pocket nappies, the lining of the pocket itself is polyester fleece, which is great for keeping bub’s bottom dry, but isn’t particularly natural. The inserts are also made of microfibre (another form of polyester) and bamboo (which sounds natural but is actually semi-synthetic and highly processed). If having natural fibres isn’t a key criteria for you then you won’t need to worry, but if you want something natural, you might want to go for something else.

A little bulky: When I say these are a little bulky, I don't mean that they're huge! But they're not the slimmest day nappies out there. This, coupled with the fact that they are very generously sized, means that they tend not to be the best for smaller babies. My personal experience has been that they worked excellently on my chunky baby, but I have never really managed to get a great fit on my tiny second baby. However, many people still love them for their tiny ones simply because they are so reliable, so I would definitely recommend giving them a go.
