Review of Pim Pam Pocket Nappy

When Pim Pam launched back in 2020, I think it was the most excited I’d ever been for a new nappy launch! But do the nappies deliver on reliability as well as looking lovely? Here’s how I’ve found them.

Summary

Pim Pam’s nappies are some of the most beautiful, easy to use and quick drying nappies out there. With unique prints designed by illustrator (and Pim Pam founder) Aless Baylis, they are fun, vibrant and really very cool. These are a mainstay in our nappy stash!

The facts

The Pim Pam pocket nappy is a birth-to-potty nappy with 2 inserts that are stuffed into a pocket.

The nappy has a PUL waterproof outer with a polyester fleece lining and comes with two inserts each made of two layers of bamboo and two layers of microfibre. The PUL is OEKO-TEX certified which means all of the printing inks have been tested so they're not harmful for babies.

The nappy fits from approximately 8-35 lbs and features a snap closure, with two rows and a hip snap for wing stability. (Note that the pictures on this review are an older version of the nappy, without hip snap and with a slightly different shape to the wings). It also has an internal double gusset.

The nappies retail for £17.99 for prints and £15.99 for solids. You can get 10% off these prices when buying direct from Pim Pam with the code ABODERIE.

Pim Pam recommends washing the nappy at 40°C. The inserts can be tumble dried, though like all nappies tumble drying too regularly may shorten their life (and isn’t great for the environment!).

Because the inserts are partly made of natural fibres, they may need a few pre-washes to reach full absorbency, but I put them through one wash and then change more often until they reach full absorbency (I’m too impatient!)

Pim Pam also make lovely wet bags and changing mats. The mats are manufactured in a small family-run OEKO-TEX factory in Portugal.

Little touches make these nappies wonderfully easy to use!

What I love

Ease of use: Pocket nappies are often some of the easiest to use, but Pim Pam have taken theirs a step further with little touches to make these wonderfully simple. It’s super easy to stuff the inserts into the pocket, thanks to a wide opening and the fact that the inserts popper together. The nappy goes on and off as easily as a disposable nappy so if you’re looking for a simple starter nappy or something to send to childcare, this would be a great one to try.

Fit: I always know a nappy is easy to fit when it’s the one my husband reaches for first, and that’s Pim Pam! Fitting a wide range of babies thanks to three sets of rise poppers, they are easy to fit right the way through the size range. Additionally, one of the inserts is shaped to be narrower in the middle, which makes for an even better fit on newborn and smaller babies. We also find them very reliable even when the fit isn’t perfect (possibly thanks to the double gusset!), which for me is the sign of true reliability and ease of use.

Drying time: These are some of the quickest drying nappies in our nappy stash, often drying in under 12 hours, even in winter. They would make a great option for anyone who doesn’t have much space for drying, or who wants to own a smaller nappy collection.

Prints: While this isn’t a practical point, I couldn’t review Pim Pam’s nappies without a mention of the prints. Designed by founder-illustrator Aless, the prints are a cut above others available on the market - fun, beautiful, tasteful, and very cool! My Pim Pam nappies are some of the first I reach for when I want to show people how lovely cloth nappies are.

What I don’t love

Synthetic fibres: Pim Pam’s nappies are quite high in synthetic fibres, which depending on your preferences, may be a downside. The microfibre in the inserts can be prone to compression leaks for some people, though I haven’t personally found this an issue with Pim Pam. There is always the option to switch out the inserts for something natural, as with any pocket nappy.
