I’ve always had a hard time finding Easter decor that matches my aesthetic. When you’re into vintage, calm interiors, yellow bunny garlands just don’t really match!
Then last year I discovered that a lovely company called Meri Meri make egg decorating tattoos with Peter Rabbit illustrations, and I knew that they would be perfect for doing easter egg crafts with my children.
Here are the full details of how we made these lovely little reusable eggs!
Ideas for Using Your Peter Rabbit Easter Eggs
Peter Rabbit-themed Easter Baskets
Make Peter Rabbit-themed Easter baskets for your children with these eggs and some small toys. My children love these eggs so much that when I use them for decor they’re always going missing! So they’re sure to go down well in a basket.
Peter Rabbit Easter Egg Hunt
Use them for an easter egg hunt. These would be so fun hidden around the garden. I even found these downloadable Peter Rabbit signs which you could use to create a sweet little Peter Rabbit-themed Easter trail.
Foraged Easter Tree
Forage some branches and hang the eggs from the branches. I absolutely love bring branches of blossom indoors in the spring. Did you know that the flowers still open once the branch has been cut? Magical! Pop a few branches in a vase and hang your eggs on them for a little Easter tree.
Peter Rabbit Wall Decor
Use them as wall decor by hanging them from a long foraged branch. Find a long, straight branch, give it a good clean and hang it on the wall with some rope. The tie your eggs round the branch at different lengths so they create a little whimsical decoration.
Easter Table Centrepiece
Create a little egg basket table centrepiece for your Easter table. Take a thrifted basket, fill with some shredded paper or straw and lay your eggs in there with some foraged flowers. This would make a really lovely addition to your Easter celebrations.
Do I have to buy the Meri Meri Egg Decorating Tattoos?
If you’d rather not buy the Peter Rabbit Egg Decorating Tattoo set, you can make your own egg tattoos by creating a file of Peter Rabbit illustrations and then printing it out onto temporary tattoo paper.
You need to have an inkjet printer to be able to print onto tattoo transfer paper. There is a great tutorial on how to do this at A Beautiful Mess.
Alternatively, you can use Peter Rabbit themed napkins and decoupage them on to your eggs. DIY Beautify has a lovely tutorial on how to do that.
Can I do this craft with real eggs?
I used ceramic and wooden eggs, both from Hobbycraft, and it worked well on both. You can also use this method on boiled eggs, or egg shells that you’ve blown, though if you use real eggs they won’t last as long.
Can I do this easter craft with my kids?
Yes, this is the perfect little craft to do with kids, since it’s so simple. Note that it will need adult supervision as there is a bit of cutting involved.
How to Make Peter Rabbit Easter Eggs
Supplies
You will need:
A pack of Meri Meri egg decorating tattoos (or make your own using the instructions above)
Ceramic or wooden eggs
Sealer spray or mod podge
A cloth
Ribbon (optional)
Hot glue (optional)
Prepare the easter egg
Start by wiping the surface of your egg clean and drying it well.
Cut out the egg decorating tattoo
Cut out the tattoo that you’d like to use and place it face down on to the surface of the egg.
Peel away the tattoo backing
Wet your cloth and dab it on the back of the tattoo paper, soaking it. Keep it there for about 30 seconds.
When you start to feel the paper sliding around a bit, gently lift the paper away.
Apply the sealer
Leave the tattoo to dry, then apply a layer of sealer, such as polycrylic spray or mod podge and leave it to dry.
Attach ribbon (optional)
If you’d like to hang your Peter Rabbit easter eggs, put a little hot glue on the top of your egg and apply a length of ribbon.
